Pleasanton Garage Door Spring Repair: Fixing a Previous Installer's Mistake
A Pleasanton homeowner's garage door spring snapped after just 5 years, well short of the 7 to 12 years a properly sized and installed spring should last. When we inspected the system, we found the real cause: the original installer had left the end plate and spring plate badly out of level, which put constant extra stress on the spring until it failed.
What the homeowner noticed
The garage door spring broke, and the door would no longer lift safely. The homeowner mentioned it had only been about 5 years since the door and opener were installed, which is unusually early for a torsion spring to fail. A neighbor referred them to Valiant Garage Door, and we scheduled a same-day appointment within the promised window.
What we found
Once we opened up the spring assembly, the problem was clear. The end plate, the bracket that anchors the shaft and bearing at the end of the torsion spring system, was severely crooked instead of level. A few feet away, the spring plate that the spring itself seats against was also incredibly crooked, which we flagged as very dangerous since a spring under tension against misaligned hardware can slip or fail unpredictably. This was a leftover mistake from the original installation, not something that developed from normal wear, and it explains why the spring only lasted 5 years instead of the 7 to 12 years a correctly installed system typically delivers.
The repair we recommended
We gave the homeowner a fair quote with several options up front. We replaced the failed torsion spring with the correctly sized Valiant spring for the door's weight, then re-leveled and corrected both the end plate and the spring plate so the new hardware would seat properly instead of repeating the same failure. We checked the shaft and bearings with a level at every mounting point before signing off, then rebalanced and cycled the door to confirm smooth, quiet operation.
Before and after
What the homeowner said
“Our garage door spring broke after just 5 years — turns out the original installer had made some mistakes. A neighbor recommended Valiant Garage Door, and Valentino came through. He was quick to respond, showed up same-day within the promised window, and gave a fair quote with several options to fix it right. He also caught and corrected the earlier installation issues. Great work and great communication throughout. Highly recommend Valentino for any garage door repairs. Thanks”
